Adherence assays and Slime production of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus BJM
Abdallah,Fethi Ben; Chaieb,Kamel; Zmantar,Tarek; Kallel,Hela; Bakhrouf,Amina.
In this study we investigated the phenotypic slime production of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, food-borne pathogens, using a Congo red agar plate assay. Furthermore, we studied their ability to adhere to abiotic surfaces and Vero cells line. Our results showed that only V. alginolyticus ATCC 17749 was a slime-producer developing almost black colonies on Congo red agar plate. Adherence to glace tube showed that all V. alginolyticus strains were more adherent than V. parahaemolyticus. Only V. alginolyticus ATCC 17749 was found to be able to form biofilm on polystyrene microplate wells (OD570 = 0.532). Adherence to Vero cells showed that all tested strains were non adherent after 30 min, however after 60 min all the studied strains...

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy of Brazilian HIV-infected children and their caregivers BJID
Ricci,Gabriela; Netto,Eduardo Martins; Luz,Estela; Rodamilans,Cynthia; Brites,Carlos.
Abstract Background Successful treatment of HIV-positive children requires a high level of adherence (at least 95%) to highly active antiretroviral therapy. Adherence is influenced by factors related to the child and caregivers. Objectives To evaluate children and caregivers characteristics associated to children's adherence. Methods Cross-sectional study, from September 2013 to June 2015, comprising a sample of caregivers of perinatally HIV-infected children, in the age group of 1–12 years, under antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months and on follow-up in two AIDS reference centers in Salvador, Bahia. Caregiver self-reports were the sole source of 4 days adherence and sociodemographic information. Study participants who reported an intake >95%...

Adhesive and invasive capacities of Edwarsiella tarda isolated from South American sea lion BJM
Fernández,Araceli; Paz Villanueva,María; González,Mario; Fernández,Fabiola; Latif,Fadua; Flores,Sandra Nonier; Fernández,Heriberto.
Edwarsiella tarda is a zoonotic bacterium that can be isolated from humans, animals and the environment. Although E. tarda is primarily considered a fish pathogen, it is the only species of its genus considered to be pathogenic for humans as well. A survey of zoonotic intestinal bacteria in fresh feces from South American sea lions (SASL) Otaria flavescens, reported E. tarda as the most frequently isolated species. In this study, we used HEp-2 cells to establish in vitro the adherence and invasive ability of 17 E. tarda strains isolated from SASL fecal material. All the strains were able to adhere and invade HEp-2 cells with adhesion and invasion percentages ranging from 56 to 100% and 21 to 74%, respectively. Despite the expression of these pathogenic...

Adhesive properties of an outer structure of Clostridium perfringens type A isolated from piglets with with catarrhal enteritis Rev. Microbiol.
Teixeira,Elizabeth Pelosi; Serafim,Marlene Braide; Höfling,Maria Alice Cruz; Yamada,Aureo T.; Castro,Antonio Fernando Pestana de.
One strain (S32) of Clostridium perfringens type A was isolated from a case of catarrhal enteritis of piglets. This strain was able to adhere to HeLa cells showing an adherence index (AI) of 25.15 ± 1.26 (mean ± 1 standard error of the mean). Treatment of the bacterial cells with trypsin (0.25mg/ml) decreased in 70%-80% the AI and metaperiodate (10mg/ml) abolished completely the adherence, suggesting that the structure responsible for this phenomenon was probably a glycoprotein. Heating of bacterial suspensions (100ºC/5 min) before carrying out the adhesion test decreased the AI rendering it equal to the negative controls. Rabbit homologous S32 antiserum inhibited the adherence up to dilutions of 1: 640, at least. The piglet ileal loop assay, carried out...

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitansarcB influences hydrophobic properties, biofilm formation and adhesion to hydroxyapatite BJM
Longo,PL; Ota-Tsuzuki,C; Nunes,ACR; Fernandes,BL; Mintz,K; Fives-Taylor,P; Mayer,MPA.
The regulation of gene expression in the oral pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is still not fully elucidated. ArcAB is a two-component system which allows facultative anaerobic bacteria to sense various respiratory growth conditions and adapt their gene expression accordingly. This study investigated in A. actinomycetemcomitans the role of arcB on the regulation of biofilm formation, adhesion to saliva coated hydroxyapatite (SHA) and the hydrophobic properties of the cell. These phenotypic traits were determined for an A. actinomycetemcomitansarcB deficient type and a wild type strain. Differences in hydrophobic properties were shown at early and late exponential growth phases under microaerobic incubation and at late exponential phase under...

An adherence trilogy is essential for long-term HAART success BJID
Garcia,Rosa; Schooley,Robert T.; Badaró,Roberto.
Adherence is the milestone of a successful therapy. Over the last decade several authors have addressed the importance of adherence for optimal results of antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. Many health care systems are investing substantial resources to make available contemporary antiretroviral therapy. Despite the large investment in medications, insufficient investments have been made into an integrated adherence component to maximize the impact of these medications. Adherence, unlike drug therapy, cannot be defined as a single method with a defined prescription or formula. Instead, it is the result of a complex interaction between the patient, a prescribed medication and the health system. Many reports are available analyzing each of these components. We...

The objective of the present study was to investigate the in vitro adherence capacity of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. Adherence assays were conducted on dental surfaces and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Extracted human teeth were inoculated with Streptococcus mutans or Candida albicans and with both species simultaneously, and incubated at 37ºC for 21 days. Bacterial inocula had been obtained from saliva samples of children that had been colonized by both organisms. ATCC reference strains were used as controls. SEM analyses showed that the biofilm that covered the entire analyzed dental surface was more homogeneous inoculated with the two microorganisms simultaneously than with each species separately. In a second...

Santos,Brigitte Rieckmann Martins dos; Teixeira,Juliana; Gonçalves,Débora; Gatti,Reynaldo Mascagni; Yavo,Boni; Aragão,Cicera Cristina Vidal.
Adherence to pharmacological treatment for hypertension is considered a key factor in guaranteeing successful therapy outcomes. Knowledge of the disease, its complications, as well as the need for changes in lifestyle, call for patient motivation and continuous interactive education. The evidence regarding the beneficial effects of changes in life style by hypertensive individuals in reducing the complications of the disease, as well as in its prevention are indisputable. However, the challenges posed by patient adherence to treatment prescribed by doctors remain. The aim of this study was to assess blood pressure levels together with degree of adherence to pharmacological treatment with Enalapril Maleate by means of the Morisky-Green Test, in hypertensive...

Cell surface characteristics and adherence of typeable and non-typeable strains of Streptococcus suis from pig farms in Cuba Rev Salud Anim.
Espinosa Castaño,Ivette; Arias Baéz,Michel; Lobo Rivero,Evelyn; Martínez Marrero,Siomara.
Streptococcus suis infection is considered a major problem in the swine industry. There are 35 known serotypes of S. suis based on the capsular polysaccharides (CPS) on the cell surface. Serotype 2 is the most virulent in pigs and humans. Some S. suis strains do not agglutinate with any of the typing antisera and are identified as non-typable strains, which have generally been viewed as organisms that do not cause important clinical infections. Previous studies have shown differences in the composition and properties of the cell surface among these strains. The aim of this study included the characterization of cell hydrophobicity, ability to adhere to plates, and autolysis over time of typeable and non-typeable strains of S. suis from farms of the Cuban...

Evaluation of HIV/AIDS patients' knowledge on antiretroviral drugs BJID
Almeida,Regina Flávia de Castro; Vieira,Anya Pimentel Gomes Fernandes.
Lack of information on antiretroviral drugs or the misunderstanding of available information can facilitate incorrect use of such drugs. This can result in non-adherence to the prescribed regimen, leading to a great possibility of a therapeutic failure. The aim of this study was to know which information HIV/AIDS patients, who receive their medicines at the pharmacy of a reference hospital in the northeast Brazil, have on the drugs they use, the source of this information and whether there is a need for additional information. A total of 195 HIV/AIDS patients, who were using either zidovudina + lamivudina 300+150mg (AZT+3TC), efavirenz 600mg (EFZ) or lopinavir/ritonavir 133.33/33mg (LPV/r), were interviewed. EXPERIMENTAL MODEL OF CANDIDA ALBICANS (SEROTYPES A AND B) ADHERENCE IN VITRO BJM
Pires,Maria de Fátima Costa; Corrêa,Benedito; Gambale,Walderez; Paula,Claudete Rodrigues.
The adherence of Candida albicans is considered an important virulence factor since it determines the colonization of the yeast in various regions of the host, being the initial cause of the infection. In this work we studied the adherence of C. albicans (serotypes A and B) to HeLa and Vero cells after culture for 18 h and 30 h in chemically defined medium (YNB) plus carbohydrate sources such as glucose, sucrose, maltose, galactose and mannose (500 mM). Each assay was performed in triplicate. The best results were obtained with the medium containing glucose. The adherence was greatest in 18 h cultures at 37ºC and at 1 h contact time. The interaction of yeast cells with the host cells was studied by scanning microscopy.

Influence of subinhibitory concentrations of antimicrobials on hydrophobicity, adherence and ultra-structure of Fusobacterium nucleatum BJM
Okamoto,Ana C.; Gaetti-Jardim Jr.,Elerson; Arana-Chavez,Victor E.; Avila-Campos,Mario J..
Fusobacterium nucleatum is considered a bridge organism between earlier and later colonizers in dental biofilms and a putative periodontopathogen. In Dentistry, antimicrobial agents are used for treatment and control of infectious diseases associated with dental plaque. Antiseptics have been used in association with antibiotics to reduce infections after oral surgeries. In this study, the influence of subinhibitory concentrations (SC) of chlorhexidine, triclosan, penicillin G and metronidazole, on hydrophobicity, adherence to oral epithelial cells, and ultra-structure of F. nucleatum was examined. All isolates were susceptible to chlorhexidine, triclosan, and metronidazole; however, most of the isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, and all of them...

Invasin gimB found in a bovine intestinal Escherichia coli with an adherent and invasive profile BJM
Matter,Letícia B.; Spricigo,Denis A.; Tasca,Caiane; de Vargas,Agueda C..
The invasin gimB (genetic island associated with human newborn meningitis) is usually found in ExPEC (Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli) such as UPEC (uropathogenic E. coli), NMEC (neonatal meningitis E. coli) and APEC (avian pathogenic E. coli). In NMEC, gimB is associated with the invasion process of the host cells. Due to the importance of E. coli as a zoonotic agent and the scarce information about the frequency of gimB-carrying strains in different animal species, the aim of this study was to investigate the presence of gimB in isolates from bovine, swine, canine and feline clinical samples. PCR was conducted on 196 isolates and the identity of the amplicons was confirmed by sequencing. Of the samples tested, only E. coli SB278/94 from a...

Lack of effect of motivation on the adherence of HIV-positive/AIDS patients to antiretroviral treatment BJID
Garcia,Rosa; Pondé,Milena; Lima,Manuela; Souza,Alba Regina de; Stolze,Silvia Maria de O.; Badaró,Roberto.
As a result of the potent drug combinations of reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors currently available, it is now possible to achieve extreme reductions in the numbers of viral particles in the peripheral blood of HIV-positive patients undergoing treatment, to the point that they are undetectable. Moreover, the immunological recovery resulting from continued and prolonged use of these drugs significantly reduces both mortality and the incidence of opportunistic infections. However, the strict therapeutic regimens required, the number of pills, adverse events and the stigma of a disease that requires the patient to introduce pill-taking into his/her lifestyle brings into question one aspect of mental health, which is motivation to do...
